Roles of Packaging

Packaging is meaningless without the product for which it was designed. Its primary function is to preserve and protect the product throughout the manufacturing, transport, storage and consumption chain. In other words, it prevents part or the entire product from going to waste, which would result in an economic and environmental loss. But proper packaging is also a guarantee for consumer health and safety. Finally, packaging fulfills other functions: it carries information, acts as a marketing tool, and enables products to be offered in different formats and portions, in line with consumer needs.

How packaging can reduce food waste

Packaging requires an average of 10% of the energy needed during the life cycle of a food product.

In developing countries, 25 to 50% of food is wasted even before it reaches the consumer because of inappropriate transport, storage and packaging.

 In our part of the world, this figure varies between 2 and 3%. Nevertheless, a lot of food is still wasted after purchase.
